How to Find Meaning in Your Job
How to Find Meaning in Your Job How to Find Meaning in Your Job Article by Shawn AchorAccording to Yale professor and researcher Amy Wrzesniewski, Ph.D., people have one of threeorientations towardtheir workPeople with a job see work as a chore and the paycheck as their reward. They work because they have to.People with a career like the concept of advancing and succeeding.People with a calling find their work fulfilling andmeaningful. They feel their work leverages their strengths and contributes to the greater good.Unsurprisingly, people with a callingboth find their work mora rewarding and work harder and longer because of that. As a result, ansicht people are generally more likely to get ahead. Those who dont have a callingorientation neednt despair. Wrzesniewskis most interesting finding is notthat peoplerelate to their work in one of these three ways, but that a persons orientation toward their work doesnt necessarily depend on the type of work they do. For example, there are doctors who see their work as a job and custodians who see their work as a calling. In fact, in one study of 24 administrative assistants, each orientation was represented in nearly equal thirds, even though each persons job description, salary, and level of education were roughly identical. No matter what job you have, you can find meaning in it. In my consulting work with companies, I encourage employees to rewrite their job description to be more calling-focused. I have them think about how the same tasks might be written in a way that would entice others to apply for the job. The goal is not to misrepresent the work they do, but to highlight the meaning that can be derived from it.Next,I askemployees to think of their own personal goals in life. How can their current job tasks be connected to their larger purpose? Even the smallest taskscan be imbued with greater meaning when they are connected to personal goals and values. The more we can align our daily tasks with our personal visions, the more likely we are to see our work as a calling. You can also try this quick exercise to find a small dose of meaning in your jobOn a piece of paper, write downa mandatory work task you find devoid of meaning - perhaps something you dread doing.Ask yourself what the purpose of the task is, and then write down the answer. If that answer still seems devoid of meaning, ask yourself what this result leads to. Write down that answer.Continue this process until you find a meaningful result.A version of this article originally appeared onSUCCESS.com.

Part Car, Part Motorcycle, All Eco-Friendly
Part Car, Part Motorcycle, All Eco-Friendly Part Car, Part Motorcycle, All Eco-Friendly Part Car, Part Motorcycle, All Eco-FriendlyIt may sound counterintuitive for a technology-driven startup to include no new technology as one of four carved-in-stone konzeption principles to be followed, but thats exactly what Paul Elio did when he founded Elio Motors.A few years back when Elio, an engineer and automotive enthusiast, looked at the lay of the land, he vowed to come up with a highly fuel-efficient car that everyone could afford, and the company was born. That was 2008. Today, Elio Motors expects its three-wheeled, two-passenger Elio, classified as a motorcycle but designed and equipped like a car, tolaunch in the fourth quarter of 2016.Elio started the company with four must-haves as part of his vision affordability (now pegged at $6,800), high fuel efficiency (84 mpg), the highest safety ratings, and no new technology. We strongly believe that technical risk for a startup is a death knell, says Hari Iyer, Elio Motors COO and a board member, because solving technical issues will take months longer than planned and be costly. Even with a commitment to no new technology whenever possible, funding has been one of Elio Motors biggest challenges.Paul Elio and his car. Image Elio MotorsWe do have innovation, says Iyer, also an engineer. Its architectural innovation, which he said Paul Elio likens to wheels on luggage, taking two known technologies and coming up with something different. Its the same thing with our vehicle. Whenever possible, the vehicle uses proven technology. When you work with a large gruppe, it is easy to lose focus of goals. Engineers being engineers, they love to do new stuff, Iyer says. Its very important to harness and channel all the creative energy of engineers and go in the same direction. However, Its easier said than done to stay true to the no new technology canon, he admitted. Elio Motors learned the hard way. Engineers came up with the id ea for a door they called a scissor door that would rotate out a little and then swing up to avoid little dings when in a tight space. Only after the engineering was completed did it become apparent that the door had a lot of complexity, meaning a greater technical risk and cost. While it solved the door ding problem, it created other issues of which the team hadnt thought For example, howwould the scissor door open inside a garage without hitting the garage ceiling? We knew the canons of the project vision but we couldnt help ourselves, Iyer says. When you have smart engineers, thats a natural trap of the process. After that, the team re-committed to the no-new-technology principle. It was challenging to work so disciplined, Iyer says. We had to go through the process to completely internalize that goal. Its elend that we dont want really cool ideas. Its about taking technical risk and which ones have technical risk or not. There were many other, smaller examples, but the team figured out how to assess risk quickly, such as with a windshield wiper. One idea was to use an inexpensive, off-the-shelf water bottle and put the assembly motor for pumping the fluid on top. In concept that sounds like a great idea, but when we did the economics, most of the cost is not in the bottle but in the motor, so being able to integrate the motor into an existing model was not as risky and thus less costly, Iyer says. These issues had to be addressed because of unique aspects of the vehicle, for example, the height being the same as other vehicles but only half the width. In order for the windshield wiper to have the right coverage, it had to be the same length as a standard wiper but provide half the coverage on width. We were able to overcome this with help from our suppliers, Iyer says. He says major supplier-partners contribute in a big way to the global optimum solution. Typically, Elio and suppliers meet regularly as a team to resolve issues. The Elio will feature a 55-horsep ower engine. Image Elio MotorsAnother challenge was to find a powertrain. Trying to use as many off-the-shelf items as possible, the engineers looked at various options. But if the vehicle used an engine designed for the smallest existing car, it would be 30% less efficient on the Elio because the vehicle is half the weight of a subcompact. Operating conditions for a lighter vehicle are different from a heavier vehicle, Iyer explained. A decision was made that the best solution would be for powertrain systems developer IAV to design an engine specifically for the Elio.Paul Elios vision also incorporated his desire to have a positive energy/environmental impact and a socioeconomic impact. We feel we have a better green story than electric vehicles, Iyer says. If the Elio sells the volume we expect it to sell, it will reduce in a five-year period U.S. fuel consumption by 0.35%.Its very fashionable to talk about electric vehicles, but at 84 miles per gallon, we are 85% of the way there , and were doing so at one-fifth to one-tenth of the cost of the vehicle. Which will have a bigger impact? As for its socioeconomic impact, Iyer says its Shreveport, LA manufacturing facility and supply base will provide 3,000 jobs and an estimated 18,000 additional jobs indirectly. We feel good about having that kind of impact as well, Iyer says.Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. For Further DiscussionWe strongly believe that technical risk for a startup is a death knell.Hari Iyer COO and Board Member, Elio Motors

5 Key Steps to Enrich Your Job
5 Key Steps to Enrich Your Job5 Key Steps to Enrich Your JobJob Enrichment occurs when a job is redesigned in order to make it more challenging and/or less repetitive. Instead of moving an employee to a different job, the job itself changes. A recent survey found that 53 percent of employees say the number one reason they love their company is interesting and challenging work. If you want your employees to love you, making their work more interesting can be the first step along that path. If you want to love your job, you can make changes yourself (with management support). Making Your Job More Enriching Of course, not all work is interesting. We call it work because its not playing. The idea that a babo needs to turn work into a circus is laughable. But, you can still make a job more enriching without dropping the important tasks. Here are 5 ways to make your own job more enriching, which will motivate you to perform better. If you wait for your boss to enrich your job, you may be waiting for a long time. Identify key tasks. If your hours were suddenly cut from 40 to 20, what are the things you would do first? If you are told at 800 am that the regional vice president is showing up at noon to check on how things are going, what tasks do you start working on?Thought exercises like this can help you to identify the tasks that are truly important. Sometimes the things that take up much of our time arent the things that are the most important.Consult with your boss as well. Ask what she sees are the key tasks. Pay special attention to the answers, because its critical that you dont accidentally eliminate something that your boss sees as important. Get rid of useless tasks. How often do you go to work and do something that seems like a tremendous waste of time? Do you ever make reports that no one ever uses? File paper copies in a filing cabinet, when the same information is available electronically? These tasks arent key to the job, but they take up a lot of t ime. Take a few minutes to sit down and identify what is not adding value.Once youve identified tasks that dont add value, you will need to speak with the other stakeholders. You may be 99 percent sure that no one looks at the report you create, but if you just stop sending it, someone will be angry.Figure out what will happen if you stop doing the tasks youve identified as unimportant. Consider the consequences before suggesting a change. Make sure you check with your boss before quitting each task. Think about automating. Maybe that report you do is really critical and lots of people rely on it, but its boring as all get out to make. If thats the case, ask yourself, Can I automate this? Reports put together in Excel can often be automated in Microsoft Access.Additionally, if you reorder your tasks, you may find that things function more quickly and easily with a few tweaks. For example, if you have to spend a lot of time handling paper, you can institute a one-touch rule. That is, each piece of paper only gets handled one time. You receive it, do what needs to be done, and file it away in one fell swoop. It practically eliminates the dreaded filing days. Figure out what will bring value to the business. While you want to enrich your job in order to make your life better, your boss will be much happier if you put the business first. Identify areas within your department or company that could use a bit more support or additional knowledge. If youve freed up some time by automating and eliminating tasks, you can propose to do something different.Dont just jump in and start doing the new tasks (unless your boss is totally hands off), but bring them up to your manager. Point out that youve managed to free up some time and since the company could really use an additional person trained to do X or Y, youd like to start working on that. Smart bosses will jump on the opportunity for you to do something that helps the company grow. Add enrichment yourself. Sometimes y our boss wont be amenable to making changes to your job. If thats the case, figure out where you want to be in a year, or two years, and start working towards that. Some of your preparation can be official, work-related activities. Asking to attend a specific meeting, for example, may not be considered out of bounds but will open you up to new opportunities and ideas. If that doesnt work, try taking a class or learning a new task on your own. It may seem silly to enrich your job by doing something outside of work, but as you gain new skills and knowledge, your boss may be willing to let you make internal changes. You can enrich just about any job. If you desire to learn and work hard, your boss will see your hard work and hopefully reward you with more interesting and engaging tasks. - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance writer who spent 10 years in corporate human resources, where she hired, fired, managed the numbers, and double-checked with the lawyers.

The Most Incredibly Overlooked Answer for What Should a Resume Look like The Death of What Should a Resume Look like The peak of your resume should now be customized to rival the work title of the job that you are seeking (At a minimum). Theres a sense in which a resume is essential for college applications and receiving jobs. Its generally very easy (You just need to know why you want to have that job) Mentioning it shows how serious youre at your work and how efficiently you are able to handle things. Most employers who hire a short-term worker are ready to offer on the work training. You will need to demonstrate how youve taken on responsibility previously and the way you are able to be trusted to select the health and safety of your clients and colleagues seriously. In the present dynamically changing job market, it is quite required to sell your skills to the possible employer. Its so obvious that an individual trying to land an internship doesnt have a great deal of wor k experience. Actually, you might want to begin there and see how it goes. Be aware that even the most well-prepared response will fall short if it doesnt answer the precise question youre being asked. While a resume image could be the norm in different parts of the Earth, there isnt any demand for a picture on your resume in the usa. Know the businesss tone With many templates readily available angeschlossen on the web, you must be aware of which is the correct one. Youll also require a book for a reference, which might or might not be the identical book you used to learn the fundamentals. Before you begin to write, find out more about the corporations culture and earn information regarding the man who will be reading it. If you have several job targets tailor each resume to improve the outcome. You are making a customer persona which is going to be your blueprint for the rest of the work application. In case the job involves a whole lot of prototyping, for instance, emphasize prototyping on your resume. Besides your resume, you can incorporate a digital portfolio in a work application so as to showcase all your works. What Should a Resume Look like Secrets That No One Else Knows About Its important to have a minumum of one or two questions prepared so as to demonstrate your interest in the organization. A resume should be concise and still offer enough info to receive your foot in the door for an interview. Place your name and contact information at the peak of the resume. Nicolas Roth - French working holiday maker
Nicolas Roth - French working holiday maker Nicolas Roth French working holiday makerPosted October 13, 2011, by Josie Chun I welches tired of living in Luxembourg, sick of my job and I needed a break. A former colleague of mine welches travelling around Australia and told me about this working holiday visa, which Id never heard of before. I thought it welches a good way to travel and see Australia while also working and enjoying my time there. Nicolas, 31, is a French traveller in Australia who originally came on a working holiday visa. During his time in Sydney he has worked as a ghost in an Easter Show haunted house, a labourer, waiter, gardener, kitchen cleaner and removalist before landing an accounting role. He has pursued studies in Australia and has just been sponsored by an employer to stay and work as an auditor. Nicolas shares his first impressions of Australia and some of the experiences he has been through since coming here. What were you doing for work before you c ame to Australia? I welches working as an accountant in Luxembourg, where I worked for four years. What did you study at college? I attended a graduate business school for three years, then I did a Masters in Finance and Accounting. What made you decide to do a working holiday in Australia? I was tired of living in Luxembourg, sick of my job and I needed a break. A former colleague of mine was travelling around Australia and told me about this working holiday visa, which Id never heard of before. I thought it was a good way to travel and see Australia while also working and enjoying my time there. Was it hard to get a working holiday visa? No, it was pretty easy. Did you apply directly with the Australian Embassy or did you apply through a migration company? I applied for my working holiday visa online, without any migration agent, because they charge a lot of money What were your first impressions of Australia? When I first arrived in Sydney it was sunny and hot, so my first impres sion was of the beautiful weather. I also found the people to be very helpful when I was lost people came straight away to help. How did you find accommodation? The night before taking the plane I was told to head to Bondi Beach and find a backpackers hostel, and from there to get to know Sydney and then choose a place to live. What jobs have you had and how did you find them? I stayed in the backpackers for six to eight months, and the main reason was so I could hear about jobs through word of mouth. In the backpackers you have many guys from everywhere, with all different kinds of skills waiters, electricians, carpenters so that helped me to make connections and find some jobs like labouring, gardening, construction. After a while, I had the opportunity to work in catering at Luna Park, which I found out about through word of mouth. There were lots of job opportunities there because it was the Christmas season and there were many company functions. Then I went back to doing manual jobs, mostly removals, as well as construction, and I eventually found an accounting job. How did you get the accounting job? I was tired of doing casual jobs, I wanted something mora stable, and I managed to get a list of contacts of French people working in some French companies here in Australia. I spent a day in an Internet caf and sent out about 400 resumes. Out of all those people I sent my resume to, only two or three guys called me back asking me about the nature of my visa and my skills, and one was willing to interview me and thats how I got my job. It was just a temporary job replacing someone who was on maternity leave. What was your worst job in Australia? Before I found my accounting job, I was working as a ghost in the haunted house at the Easter Show. It sounds interesting and everyone dreams about that kind of life, entertaining people with other travellers but it was a nightmare. It was long hours, really bad pay, and people werent treated well because th e employer knew there were so many other backpackers willing to do the job. So bad money, bad atmosphere and long hours. Now looking back it was a funny experience, but at the time it was pretty hard. Actually, I thought of one even worse job I had, which was being a kitchen cleaner at a backpackers. Compared to that, being a ghost was great fun Have you done any courses while youve been here? Yes, I extended my stay here with a student visa. Im studying business at a college in the city. Im going to school and attending lectures, and Ive been there since December. But I cant work much with a student visa, you are only allowed to work 20 hours a week with the same employer, and you need to attend at least 80 per cent of lectures. I also did an RSA course (Responsible Service of Alcohol, required to serve alcohol in bars and restaurants), and a barista certificate though I dont think the barista certificate really helped me to find a job. You just found a company to sponsor you f or a working visa. How did you find this job? I knew that my only chance to get sponsored was to apply for jobs in my area, which is auditing. I knew that the Big Four companies (PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, Ernst Young, KPMG) would start hiring again after the downturn last year so I just focused on them because they were the kind of companies who could afford to sponsor someone like me. I was lucky. Among the Big Four, two were interested in interviewing me. I was out of practice with interviews because I hadnt been involved in the business for six months, so it was a kind of rediscovery process. I had a few other phone interviews for jobs in Europe and that helped me to practise again, so I got better. I had four different interviews with my company and met six different people, and each time I managed to convince them to go further into the process. So the company is sponsoring you on a working visa as an employer-sponsored worker? Yes. I signed a contra ct for two years, with the possibility of extension for two additional years. But in the meantime if they arent happy with me and I dont pass my probation period, then I only have 26 days to find aleidher sponsorship, or Im asked to leave the country. Can you leave the company before the two years? No, its a kind of commitment. Can you apply for residency while youre working for them? Yes, I can. Normally it can take between two and three years to get an answer once youve lodged an application, but being sponsored can speed up the process so my plan is that once my working visa comes through I will lodge my application for a permanent resident visa. It helps that on the skilled occupation list, the ort of auditor is one of the top ranked. When did you decide that you wanted to settle here? It was a step-by-step process. Ive had a good time but also some bad times too, struggling to find a job. I decided to try to extend my stay, find a job and settle down so I could enjoy my stay here more than I had before. What was your English like before you came here? Pretty much the same as now. I think it even got worse because I spend the day with my flatmate, who is also French. But Ive improved my English by watching TV and reading the newspaper. Have you found it easy to make friends? When I was living in the backpackers it was quite easy to meet people and make friends, but most of them are travellers so they leave after a while. Meeting travellers is easy, but meeting locals is harder if youre not working because you dont want to spend money, so its more difficult to socialise. I was socialising more when I was working as an accountant, but when that job ended I just focused on my job search. How did you fund your trip? I had saved money while I was working in Luxembourg, and otherwise I just tried to make money working here. You need to arrive with a certain amount of money, between AUD$3000 and $4000 in your bank account. Thats something Customs may ask you when you arrive in Australia. Do you think youll eventually return to France? Oh, sure. I dont think Ill stay in Australia forever. Whats been the best aspect of your visit so far? The best thing is that I had time to think, to have a break and discover a new kind of world. I wanted to change my job and have a different experience, but now Im happy to return to the office.Graduate Certificate in International Tourism and Hotel Mana...Study modeOn CampusPayment optionsFEE-HELPUpfront paymentCourse guide+ FREE eBrochureEnquire verbunden Enquire zugreifbarTourism ResourcesTour guide sample resumeTour guide sample cover letterCareer Insider StoriesShelley Lask - Body Positive Health & FitnessInterested in becoming a?Marketing OfficerProject ManagerEvent CoordinatorSmall Business ManagerDepartment ManagerPopular Career Searcheshow to become a tour guide in australiagovernment funded tourism courses melbournehow to become a travel agent australiaonline travel agent courseshow to become a travel agent in australiaTourism CoursesDiploma of Hospitality ManagementEnquire Online Enquire OnlineBachelor of Business in Hotel ManagementEnquire Online Enquire OnlineMaster of International Tourism and Hotel ManagementEnquire Online Enquire OnlineDiploma of Hotel ManagementEnquire Online Enquire OnlineJosie ChunRelated ArticlesBrowse moreMeet an Anzac Gallipoli tour leaderId been living in Turkey for a number of years and, as an Australian, it was inevitable that I ended up working with Australians coming over to Gallipoli for Anzac day.JOB HUNTINGThe best job in the worldA huge salary package, a multi-million dollar beach house and a job description to have fun. Survey 60% of workers are planning their exit over bad boss
Survey 60% of workers are planning their exit over bad bossSurvey 60% of workers are planning their exit over bad bossWhen your best employee quits, they may outwardly give practical reasons. More pay Bigger responsibilities Cool perks But the decision is also likely to be driven by bad personal experiences. In a newly released Randstad US survey of 763 adults, bad bosses, unhealthy office politics, and feeling unvalued and disrespected were top reasons given of why employees quit, or were currently considering it.Many employees quit bosses more than jobsYes, many employees quit for pragmatic reasons like money. The vast majority of respondents - 82% - said they expected pay raises every year to stay with their current employers. But healthy and happy relationships with managers can get an employee to stay even when salaries are low, suggesting that these relationships can be the ultimate dealbreaker. Fifty-eight percent of workers said that they would stay at their job with a lowe r salary if they could work with a great boss. When your relationship with your boss sours, so does the idea of waking up each day to work for them.Sixty percent of respondents have left jobs, or are actively considering leaving, because they do not like their direct supervisors.A bad office environment can also drive employees out the door. When employees do not feel like they belong at work, 38% of them start thinking of an exit plan. Bad office politics caused more than half of respondents to quit a job, or consider quitting. Feelings about colleagues can get tangled with feelings about jobs. When you experience rudeness on a daily basis, your perspective on the job also shifts. One study found that victims of workplace rudeness reported feeling like their jobs were threatened and that they were alone. When employees do stay at their jobs year after year, it is not necessarily because they love the job. It may be because they are choosing the security of the job over the fear of th e unknown. The security of a paycheck with comfortable benefits can get an unhappy employee to stay.Fifty-four percent of employees said they felt pressure to stay at a job because they were the primary financial provider. More than half of participants said they would stay because they did not want to start with less time off at their next job.But amongst these employees that stay, there is also likely an undercurrent of anxiety over job hunting. Seventy-one percent of respondents admitted that they are staying in their current jobs because it was easier than searching for a new one. When we feel respected and valued by our colleagues, they can make us want to stay at a job, even when there are more practical reasons to quit. But when they make our days nightmares, we are more driven to overcome the inertia of staying, so that we can find a way out.

What Game of Thrones Can Teach Us About Time Management
What Game of Thrones Can Teach Us About Time ManagementWhat Game of Thrones Can Teach Us About Time ManagementWARNING Season Eight spoilers below. Shows done, people, its all fair game.Regardless of whether or not youve signed the petition, you probably know that the general response to the final season of Game of Thrones has been lukewarm. Character arcs took some sharp turns, there are plot holes galore (Why does Bran need a Master of Whisperers if he can binnensee everything that happens? Who even was the Prince(ss) Who Was Promised? Whos littering all these beverages across Westeros?), and the pacing was absolutely bonkers. What the heck happened? You may remember back at the premiere, George R.R. Martin said, I wish we had a few more seasons. I laughed when I heard that. Martin has been writing The Winds of Winter, the sixth book in A Song of Ice and Fire, for more than eight years. The series was originally planned as a trilogy now itll be at least seven books, plus two Targarye n history books. Of curse he wanted more seasons.I recant all my laughter, George. You were right- Game of Thrones couldve used another season or two. The showrunners had approximately 1,001 plotlines, and six episodes in which to tie them up. Thats an impossible task. Yet, they managed to finish the show- I dont believe it was done as well as it couldve been done, but it was indeed done.So how did they manage it? Below are three time-management tips based on the final season of Game of Thrones.Assess what youve got use lists to get organized.Part of time management is knowing what you need to accomplish and how much time you have. Taking GoT as an exampleChoreograph two wars.Have at least two usurpings of the Iron Throne.Have satisfying deaths for a dozen beloved characters- all in six episodes.Knowing where you stand at the start of a task is important- which is why every season premiere of Game of Thrones was a place-setting episode, so we remembered who was where and what they w ere up to.If youre feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount you have to accomplish, make a list of everything you need to doKill Lyanna Mormont in the most badass way possible.Turn The Breaker of Chains into The militrischer abschirmdienst Queen.Decide whether or not the Scorpions burn in dragon fire.Break complex tasks down into smaller parts when you list them- to make things that are huge and unwieldly seem less daunting. Then, make a rough guess as to how long each of these tasks will take you. Do you have enough time to do everything youre supposed to? Quite simply, does the math check out? If not, try speaking to your manager about priorities or asking your professor for an extension.Pace yourself. Now that you know what it is youre doing, how are you going to approach your task? Maintaining a consistent workflow is a lot easier to plan for than a feast-or-famine situation. Think about it- would you rather have about the same amount of work every day, or spend part of your week doing nothing much and the other part frantically churning out work product? Maybe you thrive off the energy of the second scenario, but you have to admit that its tough to sustain.Game of Thrones had one heck of a pacing problem in its final season. For reasons unbeknownst to me, very little actually happened in episodes one, two, and (to a lesser extent) four. Meanwhile, episodes three, five, and six were jam-packed of rapid-fire plot points. I mentioned in my last point that very little ever happens in a GoT season premiere, but to follow that place-setting episode up with one mostly about giants milk and Podricks audition for Westerosi Idol rather than something substantive was an interesting choice. A choice that necessitated the substantive plot points be crammed into later episodes and perhaps not get the screen time they merited. Wouldnt the season have been much more engaging and satisfying if it was organized in such a way that something truly meaningful to the overarchin g plot happened in every episode? And wouldnt your work week be more productive if you took the time to move forward on your project day-by-day- rather than stressing yourself out by putting it off some days and overworking yourself on others? Not to mention that taking the time you have to meaningfully address your tasks can mitigate the problems that arise if/when you have to troubleshoot down the road.If I had a nickel for every time I heard the phrase, I work best under pressure, Id be the Iron Bank. But theres a difference between pushing yourself to meet a deadline and setting yourself up for last-second disasters with a disorganized workflow. Dont do that to yourself- or to your coworkers. Make sure that you make full use of all the time you have.Weed out what doesnt matter.Full disclosure I dont like the things that showrunners Weiss and Benioff decided did and didnt matter. A lot of characters seemed to come down with a fatal bout of I didnt feel like addressing that plotli ne we set up. (See Varys, Euron.) Other characters were tucked away assumedly to save screen time. (See Bronn, Yara.) But the writers had a few scant episodes to show us not only the Great War, but the Last War- the decision not to show whatever Bronn was doing to become a qualified Master of Coin was one of economy. The writers spent the season pruning things back so only the most critical characters of an ensemble cast remained Dany, Tyrion, and the Starks. When considering how to proceed with a very full to-do list, we must also be economical in our choices. What has to be done? What projects are you working on that, uncompleted, would hold up someone elses work? Which projects have a firm deadline that absolutely cannot be pushed back? These are your Dany, Tyrion, and Starks. You have to address these tasks, or everything else falls apart. Bronn- or putting a pic on the company Instagram- might be kind of fun, but theres definitely more important stuff to deal with in a time crun ch.Im not saying that I outright hated the end of Game of Thrones. But, as a writer, I could see exactly what happened when the writers room was faced with an insurmountable amount of work and not enough runtime in which to do it all. Choices were made that got the show done. I believe better choices couldve been made but, alas, HBO never replied to all the ravens I sent about letting me in the writers room. But whether youre show-running a years-long epic on premium cable or undertaking a big project at work or school, time management is an invaluable skill to have. Game of Thrones gave us a lot to think about when it comes to story structure and character development, but Id also urge you to consider the show when framing up your own projects organize your tasks, pace yourself, and prioritize.
A 5-Step Plan for Landing a Summer Internship
A 5-Step Plan for Landing a Summer Internship 5-Step Plan for Landing a Summer Internship A 5-Step Plan for Landing a Summer Internship Internships serve a dual purpose: They provide college students with practical experience and offer employers a way to find talent to hire in the future. Also, having an internship on your resume when you graduate can give you an edge in the job market. More than three-quarters of employers surveyed by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) prefer to hire new college graduates with relevant work experience. If youre a college student and want to land an internship for the summer, start today by following these steps: (1) WRITE YOUR RESUME What motivates you to seek an internship? For most, its the opportunity to work in a job that closely resembles the kind of work they plan to pursue. Many also do it to make some money to help pay for college and a decent social life (though some internships dont pay, so keep that in mind when you're looking). Either way, your efforts should start with a resume that highlights the following: Objective: State your goal while emphasizing the value you offer the organization. Entry-level and experienced professionals must focus their resumes and cover letters on the value they bring potential employers, so this gives you an early opportunity to adopt that mindset. For instance: A summer internship position in XYZ Company's accounting department in which to contribute successful college academic experience, leadership skills, and strong work ethic in business administration, especially cost accounting and management accounting. Education and Work Experience. Consider which of these two carries more weight today. If youve performed work similar to what youd like to do in the internship even as a volunteer play that up before your education. If not, emphasize your education, especially relevant coursework. If your GPA is above 3.0, or above 3.5 within your major or in courses relevant to the job, use it. Dont forget to list other work experience even that previous summer job scooping ice cream to show that you have at least a little work history. (2) LINE UP REFERENCES Ask trusted professors and current or former bosses if they will agree to give you strong, positive references. If they do, have their names and contact information available to give the hiring manager if he or she asks for it. (3) LOOK FOR TARGET COMPANIES Make a list of employers that are within a reasonable commuting distance. Look at the Career Opportunities pages of their web sites and follow the processes for contacting them. Some may even have information specific to summer internships. In addition, web sites such as InternshipRatings.com list internship openings by geography and company. (4) FIND ADVICE ON CAMPUS Utilize your campus career services center for advice, as well as professional contacts they may have. Take advantage of any workshops that focus on interviewing and resume writing. Attend any job fairs they sponsor, especially if representatives from your target companies will be there. (5) USE YOUR ONLINE NETWORK Find friends of friends of friends on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites who can tell you about openings or the companies that interest you. The better informed you are before an interview, the easier it will be to decide whether its worth spending most of your summer in the position.
